Expanding a website design into a print publication
Marking the completion of the research project #100TechFrauen – Frauen in der Tech Ökonomie [#100TechWomen – Women of the Tech Economy] by Dr. Kira Marrs and Anja Bultemeier, this publication is the result of a collaboration of researchers, designers and print production professionals.
The book documents months of research conducted via interviews with women who work in technical contexts, who shape enterprises, and who push forward innovation. It is concerned with core questions about equality, participation, and change in the tech economy.
As the lead designer and art director on the team, I took a modular illustrative approach which carries and enhances the messages of over 40 in-depth interviews contained within the publication.
Picking up on the abstract spatiality of the tech economy and its actors, grids of many shapes and proportions visualise the larger context, while a library of manyfold "blobs" represent and emphasise the individuality of the many actors within this space. Movement indicators such as arrows serve to illustrate the many different paths, approaches and attitudes the portrayed interviewees have taken along their individual journeys.
The basic structure of the publication consists of opener statements, color-coded chapters, and closing remarks. Each of the four large chapters is marked by a colorful opening spread, and articles within follow the same visual language and color.
